Firefox keyboard shortcuts and tips

I have been tasked with developing a Firefox add-on that is capable of registering global keyboard shortcuts (ones that will work throughout all areas of Firefox) that will open up the side-bar and execute an XMLRPC request based on previously recorded input. The idea here is that there will be many potential XMLRPC requests that the user will want to execute via a keyboard shortcut.

Currently, the add-on is capable of handling pre-defined static keyboard shortcuts via the Firefox overlay. What I would like to achieve, is to allow the user to register their own dynamic custom keyboard shortcut.

There is an add-on that currently has some of this functionality, called Keyconfig. I'm not keen on having to ask users to install a second add-on to define their own shortcuts. It also seems that using the dynamic keyboard shortcut registration method in Keyconfig would require the user to close all Firefox windows before the dynamic shortcut is made available.

I'm not able to answer "Is an XPCOM component the best way to register dynamic keyboard shortcuts from within a Firefox add-on?", but with the help of a work colleague, we have figured out a way to do the dynamic keyboard shortcuts and make them immediately usable.

Whilst being an egregious hack, as it will execute the callback for every keypress event that the chrome window processes; it does allow for the main Firefox chrome window to have dynamic keyboard shortcuts without necessitating a reload.

Many keyboard shortcuts can be customized or disabled through the use of add-ons such as the Keyconfig extension or Menu Wizard. On Mac OS X, shortcuts for menu items can be changed from the System Preferences; however this may not work as expected due to bug 429824.

You can change the keyboard shortcut in the 1Password general settings. Try changing it to Control + [Alt] + A and see if it helps. Note this means two separate shortcuts, Control + A (direct fill) and Control + Alt + A (show 1Password mini) should be working.

The following list of keyboard shortcuts should be helpful to a wide array of individuals and can be used as a quick reference guide. First, this guide will help NVDA users navigate within Mozilla Firefox. Second, this guide will be helpful to increase the awareness of web content developers regarding keyboard shortcuts that would conflict with NVDA. Finally, programmers will find the keyboard commands typical for NVDA users a helpful reference.

Some keyboard shortcuts require additional permissions or applications. These shortcuts rely on the way permissions are configured for your account and which applications are installed. The new Jira issue view supports a limited set of keyboard shortcuts (o to open the selected issue, a to assign the issue to someone, i to assign an issue to yourself, or m to quickly add a comment) for editing and updating issues. It also supports navigation with keyboard shortcuts (J = down, K = up, N = next column, and P = previous column).

If you have other Jira applications installed, you may have additional keyboard shortcuts available. For example, if you have Jira Software installed, you will see a series of additional keyboard shortcuts in the lower-right of this dialog box (and some additional Global keyboard shortcuts specific to Jira Software in the upper-left section). However, the keyboard shortcuts in the Agile Shortcuts section only function in Jira Software, and not in a Jira context.

Some keyboard shortcuts require modifier keys to be pressed simultaneously, along with a single 'action' key. Modifier keys may differ, depending on your combination of operating system and web browser. The following table identifies the modifier keys for some supported web browsers and operating systems:

Most keyboard shortcuts require the user to press a single key or a sequence of keys one after the other. Other keyboard shortcuts require pressing and holding several keys simultaneously (indicated in the tables below by the + sign). Keyboard shortcuts may depend on the keyboard layout.

Keyboard shortcuts are a common aspect of most modern operating systems and associated software applications. Their use is pervasive enough that some users consider them an important element of their routine interactions with a computer. Whether used as a matter of personal preference or for adaptive technology, the pervasiveness of common conventions means that a meaningful comparison of keyboard shortcuts can be made across various widely used operating systems.

Many shortcuts (such as .mw-parser-output .keyboard-keyborder:1px solid #aaa;border-radius:0.2em;box-shadow:0.1em 0.1em 0.2em rgba(0,0,0,0.1);background-color:#f9f9f9;background-image:linear-gradient(to bottom,#eee,#f9f9f9,#eee);color:#000;padding:0.1em 0.3em;font-family:inherit;font-size:0.85emCtrl+Z, Alt+E, etc.) are just common conventions and are not handled by the operating system. Whether such commands are implemented (or not) depends on how an actual application program (such as an editor) is written. Not all applications follow (all of) these conventions, so if it doesn't work, it isn't compatible. 2ff7e9595c
